Discover the History and Wildlife of Changuu Island

Embark on an unforgettable tour of Changuu Island, popularly known as Prison Island. Though originally intended to house criminals, the island has a much more fascinating story to tell.

Measuring just 1 km in length and about 230 meters in width, the island was once owned by an Arab slave trader who used it as a place to prevent slaves from escaping. In 1893, a prison was constructed with the intention of housing inmates from the mainland. However, it never served this purpose. Instead, the facility was later repurposed as a quarantine station for yellow fever.

Today, visitors can explore the original prison building, which still stands and now functions as a charming guest house. Your guide will walk you through the island’s rich and surprising history.

One of the main attractions of Prison Island is its giant Aldabra tortoises, gifted by the government of Seychelles in 1919. These gentle giants, some of which are over 150 years old, now inhabit the old prison cells, turning them into a sanctuary. You’ll have the chance to see, touch, and take photos with these friendly creatures, who often come up close to interact.

Besides the tortoises, the island is also home to vibrant peacocks and offers excellent snorkeling opportunities. Marvel at the colorful marine life beneath the crystal-clear waters, or simply relax on the coast and soak up the sun.

Prison Island is the perfect blend of history, wildlife, and natural beauty—an experience you won't want to miss.
