History and Paradise Combined

Begin your adventure with a visit to Changuu Island, commonly known as Prison Island. Just 1 km long and 230 meters wide, this small island holds a fascinating past. Once owned by an Arab slave trader, it was intended as a place to prevent slaves from escaping. In 1803, a prison was built to house mainland criminals, but it was later repurposed as a quarantine station during yellow fever outbreaks.

Today, the original prison building still stands and now serves as a guesthouse. Your guide will walk you through the island’s rich history, from its origins to its current role as a wildlife sanctuary.

Prison Island is now home to giant Aldabra tortoises, gifted by the Seychelles in 1820. Some of these gentle giants are over 150 years old. You’ll have the chance to interact with them, take photos, and even feed them. The island also hosts beautiful peacocks and offers opportunities for snorkeling in the surrounding crystal-clear waters.

After exploring the island, your tour continues to Nakupenda Beach—a stunning sandbank paradise perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and soaking in the serene ocean views. It’s an ideal spot to relax, top up your tan, and enjoy the beauty of the Zanzibari coast.
